The Surprising Impact of Saying “Thank You”

Shannon Harvey

I recently found myself filled with anthropological curiosity amidst the sharp suits and fabulous heels embellishing a crowd of pre-parenthood, 20-something-year-old, working professionals. As pioneers of The Selfie, millennials have a reputation for being tech-addicted entitled brats who are in need of a constant feed of positive affirmation. But this event well and truly set the record straight. In just a couple of hours this group of Gen Zers had raised $20,000 for charities working to save koalas, newborn babies in Africa, and depressed kids in remote areas. Called 10 x 10, the idea is that ten young committee members... Read full article »

Is It Possible To Become Happier? Here's The Science.

Shannon Harvey

I was recently invited to MC the world’s largest conference on happiness. It’s an extraordinary event that features pioneers who are dedicated to finding science-backed answers on how we can live happier and healthier lives. It also features ordinary people with extraordinary tales to tell. So it’s little wonder that on the first day I found myself smiling from ear to ear, feeling palpable grief, and meeting new people – all before 10am. By lunchtime, I’d laughed out loud, I’d shed a tear and I’d hugged a complete stranger, who I then ended up having lunch with. Amazing things always... Read full article »

I Had Major Health Setback, Here Is How I Coped

Shannon Harvey

As a health journalist who shares my story of recovery from a chronic disease in hope of encouraging others, it can be tempting to only share the highlights of my whole-health life, and to engage in the hashtag-driven, insta-world where wellness icons and lifestyle gurus post moment-by-moment mythology about their unblemished lives. And although I’d probably sell more books if I did, as anyone who’s been following my blog will tell you, that’s not what I’m about. While my message to those looking for ways to get healthy or stay healthy is that there is a solid foundation of evidence from... Lesssons in Mindfulness from a 3-Year-Old

Shannon Harvey

Like most people, I’ve experienced some pretty challenging times in my life (reporting in the aftermath of natural disasters, live broadcasting, and jumping into an open ocean in front of a 30,000 kilogram whale immediately spring to mind) but by far the most difficult thing I’ve ever done is be a parent. It’s an unrelenting occupation involving sleepless nights, tantrums, childcare juggling, meal planning, sibling rivalry, constant vigilance, potty training, endless cleaning, and schedule management – all of which are things that occur multiple times a day, on a good day. It is, of course, all worth it, but in... Read full article »

The Health Benefits of Gratitude

Shannon Harvey

I celebrated my 35th birthday yesterday. It had to be up there with one of the best days of my life. My two-year-old son woke me with a bright bunch of flowers and a birthday kiss. My husband made me a home cooked breakfast. I worked on my book all day and in the afternoon, I snuck away to our local beach for swim in 24-degree water (Sydney is currently in the midst a lovely long summer), after which I meditated at my favourite spot looking out over the ocean. Later that evening my parents-in-law brought around a cake they... Read full article »

Are The Holidays Bad For Our Health?

Shannon Harvey

There is one sentence in the English language guaranteed to trigger a stress response in my body and a friend said it to me the other day.  ‘There are just four weeks until Christmas.’  I instantly felt panic rising in my body with thoughts like ‘I haven’t bought any presents,’ ‘There goes my diet,’ and ‘Here come the late nights.’   To me, the modern version of the ‘Silly Season’ seems completely out of whack with the origins of many of the traditions that we celebrate. In the US, it starts with Thanksgiving and then the rest of the world... Read full article »
